Key Findings

Executive Summary

Burgan Bank demonstrates solid ESG performance across all three pillars, with particular strength in governance and sustainable finance practices. The bank has established comprehensive climate risk management frameworks, maintains strong regulatory compliance with zero significant violations, and shows commitment to diversity and community investment. While the bank has made notable progress in areas such as waste management and employee development, opportunities remain for enhancement in renewable energy adoption, external assurance of sustainability reporting, and board gender diversity.

Year-over-Year Analysis

vs 2024

Burgan Bank's ESG performance shows mixed results compared to 2024, with notable improvements in specific areas offset by declines in others. The Environmental pillar experienced the most significant changes, while Social and Governance pillars showed more moderate adjustments. The bank's continued focus on climate risk management and sustainable finance integration demonstrates sustained commitment to ESG advancement.

Environmental

Environmental performance declined from 2024 levels, primarily due to reduced scores in E1 and E2. While the bank maintained comprehensive GHG reporting and climate risk frameworks, the lack of formal SBTi commitment and limited renewable energy progress impacted carbon and energy scores.

Social

Social performance remained relatively stable with slight improvements in community investment and employee development. S1 declined from exceptional levels while S4 improved significantly, reflecting enhanced training programs and strategic partnerships.

Governance

Governance performance showed moderate decline from 2024's strong levels, primarily due to reduced scores in G1, G2, and G4. The bank maintained strong ethics practices and sustainable finance integration while facing challenges in reporting assurance and board composition.

Key Improvements
S4 improved from 8.5 to 7.0 due to doubled training hours per employee (65 vs 33) and enhanced leadership development programs including prestigious global partnerships
Waste management performance significantly enhanced with recycling volumes increasing from 4 MT to 91 MT, supporting E4 maintenance despite increased water consumption
Key Regressions
E1 declined from 8.5 to 7.5 due to lack of formal SBTi commitment and third-party verification despite comprehensive GHG reporting and science-aligned targets
E2 decreased from 8.5 to 6.5 as renewable energy remains minimal percentage of consumption despite 716% increase in solar generation
S1 reduced from 9.0 to 7.5 reflecting normalization from exceptional 2024 performance while maintaining strong community investment levels
G1 dropped from 8.0 to 6.5 primarily due to continued absence of external assurance for sustainability reporting
Outlook

Burgan Bank is well-positioned for continued ESG advancement with strong foundational frameworks in place. Key focus areas should include renewable energy expansion, external reporting assurance, and board diversity enhancement to restore previous performance levels and achieve sector leadership.

Strengths

Comprehensive climate risk management with TCFD-aligned scenario analysis integrated across 100% of portfolio and systematic ESG screening covering 69% of corporate lending
Strong governance framework with zero corruption cases, 100% ethics training completion, and robust regulatory compliance across multiple jurisdictions
Strategic community investment with KD 1 million annual spending, clear SDG alignment, and quantified program outcomes including 175 startup registrations through NEXUS platform

Areas for Improvement

Expand renewable energy adoption beyond current 0.8% of total consumption and establish formal energy reduction targets with specific timelines
Obtain external assurance for sustainability reporting to enhance credibility and transparency of ESG disclosures
Improve board gender diversity from current 14% representation and develop comprehensive ESG supplier assessment frameworks with formal codes of conduct
