Introduction
The National Bank of Kuwait continues to strengthen its position as a leader in environmental sustainability within Kuwait’s banking sector. In 2024, the bank achieved measurable progress in paper recycling, reflecting its commitment to responsible environmental practices and its support for sustainable development goals.
According to a study prepared by Mnakh for Studies and Research based on the bank’s 2024 sustainability report, NBK successfully recycled 95.1 tons of paper during the year. This represents 86.3 percent of the bank’s total paper consumption, which reached 110.239 tons.
This achievement forms part of the bank’s broader environmental sustainability strategy, which aims to reach carbon neutrality by 2060 and includes an interim target of reducing operational emissions by 25 percent by 2025.
NBK recycled 95.1 tons of paper in 2024, representing more than 86 percent of its total paper consumption.
Recycling Implementation
The recycling program was implemented through a partnership with a specialized third‑party service provider responsible for managing the recycling process. This collaboration ensured that recycling operations were conducted according to recognized environmental standards and best practices.
As a result of these efforts, the bank received an official sustainability certificate in 2024 recognizing its environmental performance and commitment to responsible resource management.
Environmental Impact
The environmental benefits of the recycling initiative were significant and measurable.
The recycling of paper helped save 1,617 trees from being cut down and conserved approximately 665,707 gallons of water. It also reduced landfill use by 285 cubic yards.
In addition, the initiative generated energy savings of 389,914 kilowatt‑hours and prevented the emission of 23,775 pounds of carbon dioxide. The recycling process also conserved approximately 30,432 liters of oil.
These results demonstrate how operational initiatives within financial institutions can contribute to meaningful environmental impact even in sectors that are not traditionally associated with high levels of emissions.
The recycling initiative helped save 1,617 trees and reduce carbon emissions while supporting the bank’s long‑term sustainability strategy.
Environmental Management Strategy
The paper recycling initiative is part of the bank’s broader environmental responsibility strategy. This strategy includes monitoring and managing greenhouse gas emissions across Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3, as well as tracking electricity consumption, water usage, and waste management.
The bank calculates its carbon footprint using internationally recognized methodologies, including the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and the ISO 14064‑1:2018 standard.
These frameworks allow the bank to measure environmental performance consistently and align its sustainability reporting with international best practices.
Global and National Alignment
The initiative also supports the bank’s alignment with international sustainability frameworks and national development priorities.
NBK has been a participant in the United Nations Global Compact since 2023 and joined the Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials in 2024. Through this membership, the bank became the first Kuwaiti bank and one of only fifteen banks in the Middle East to join the initiative.
The recycling initiative also contributes to Kuwait Vision 2035, which aims to promote sustainable economic development and responsible resource management across the country.
Sustainable Procurement and Supply Chain
The bank’s recycling initiatives are closely linked to its broader sustainable procurement strategy.
NBK launched a sustainable procurement framework designed to ensure that goods and services are sourced in an environmentally and socially responsible manner throughout its supply chain.
The bank also places strong emphasis on supporting local suppliers. In 2024, spending on local suppliers accounted for 82 percent of the bank’s total procurement expenditure.
Sustainable Finance Progress
Beyond operational sustainability initiatives, NBK has also made significant progress in expanding sustainable finance.
By the end of 2024, the bank’s sustainable assets reached 4.97 billion US dollars, representing steady progress toward its target of 10 billion US dollars in sustainable assets by 2030.
In addition, NBK issued its first green bond valued at 500 million US dollars, becoming the first Kuwaiti bank to issue a green bond.
Conclusion
These achievements reflect the National Bank of Kuwait’s leadership in advancing sustainable practices within the Kuwaiti banking sector.
Through initiatives such as large‑scale paper recycling, sustainable procurement, and green financing, the bank is actively contributing to the development of a more sustainable economy while aligning its operations with global efforts to address climate change and protect environmental resources for future generations.
